Robert Kiyosaki is truly a multi-talented personality. He is an entrepreneur, investor, motivational speaker, author and also a financial knowledge activist. He is very popular for his series of books called ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’.


Early life

Robert Toru Kiyosaki was born in 1947 in Hilo, then in the Territory of Hawaii. Kiyosaki is a Japanese American. He went to the U.S Merchant Marine Academy quickly after graduating from Hilo High School. he started working on merchant ships, which allowed him to travel to various parts of the world. These journeys exposed him to new cultures and new ways of life. Furthermore, he witnessed extremes of poverty that people faced around the world. These voyages left a profound impact on him. He graduated from the academy as a deck officer in 1969 and was honoured with the Air Medal when he served in the Vietnam War as a gunship pilot. 

                                               

From 1974 until 1978, he took up the profile of a salesman for Xerox Corporation selling copy machines. Meanwhile in 1977, having saved enough money, he started a company of his own that brought forth to the market the first nylon and Velcro ‘surfer’ wallets.

Three years later he started his own company that sold Velcro surfer wallets. The company did well for some time but unfortunately went bankrupt. At the beginning of the 1980s, Kiyosaki tried his luck in a business that certified Heavy metal rock band T-shirts. He sold this business in 1985. Nearly a decade later after struggling to achieve success Kiyosaki decided to retire at the age of 47. His big break came in 1997 when he published “Rich Dad Poor Dad.” The book is based on Kiyosaki’s childhood. Kiyosaki tells the story of how his father had a PhD but struggled with money. Meanwhile, a friend’s father had dropped out of high school and was a successful businessman. The lessons that Kiyosaki learned from his poor dad and his friend’s rich dad are what make up the book.

During the booming period of his second venture, he invested money in stock and shares and real estate. However, as time passed and business declined, his debts to banks also increased. In order to repay the same, he was left penniless and homeless.

Kiyosaki used the success of his book to create a brand around Rich Dad. He published more titles, created audio material and videos and sold his name to seminar businesses that franchise his name.

Over the years, Kiyosaki has given financial advice on a number of television news channels including CNBC, Fox Business, and Bloomberg. Additionally, he appeared on programs such as The Oprah Winfrey Show, Fox and Friends, Larry King Live, The O'Reilly Factor, The Alex Jones Show, Glenn Beck, and Your World with Neil Cavuto.
Kiyosaki met his match when he found Kim. She had moved to Hawaii for college and worked as an employee, soon realizing this wasn’t her dream. She held the same ambitions as Robert, including the desire to be independent. Kim met Robert in 1984. They immediately started working together to create a business. Their first business together began only two months after they started dating. They met in February of 1984 and got married that same year.
